Garden Open House
Join us at Bill Dykstra’s any Friday and Saturday thru August, 10:00am until dark. If you have a group that would like a tea party in the garden during the week, give a call to 978-8622. FREE WILL DONATION will go towards a SENSORY ROOM FOR CALEB ROORDA. Caleb's autism makes him highly sensory defensive. This means that all of his senses are "wired" differently than the average child. Sounds, light, touch & movement can be very over-stimulating. With sensory integration he's able to focus much better and does much less hand flapping, pacing and other behaviors common to autistic children. Sensory equipment is typically quite expensive and we're raising money to purchase much needed equipment.

We are inviting you to join us in this project by playing a part in one component of our overall plan. We will be doing a lot of research and studying on the various subjects related to worship space, and we will invite a few key speakers to provide teaching and activities for us to make informed decisions about worship space. And we will offer classes to our church and the community on the various topics related to worship space. But the real heart of this project will be the part you get to play. We would like you to join us by being a part of one of our “focus groups.” These are groups that will consist of a few people who will specifically focus on one of the topics related to worship space. These groups will then help us determine how best to implement our learning on that particular topic based on our theology and our mission as Unity Church rather than simply on aesthetics or preferences.

The specific topics will include such things as the location, size, and style of the pulpit, the Communion table, the baptismal font, and the music area. Other topics include seating, sound, lighting, and visual elements like multimedia, decorations, and art. In all, we anticipate there will be about ten different focus groups. You are welcome to be in more than one group if you would like. If you already serve in one of these areas (e.g. sound, computer, decorating, etc.), it would be very beneficial to have you work with that focus group. The Worship Grant Team will provide each group with a small packet of readings to help stimulate the discussion and offer direction in making worship space decisions based on theology and mission. Your input will offer extremely important guidance to the decision-making process of what our worship space will look like and what it will communicate to all who enter this place of worship.

Our goal is that as we seek to engage in authentic worship, we would strive to create an environment that communicates who God is and who we are, to forge strong connections between mission and worship, to be welcoming and hospitable to all who enter our church, and to draw each worshipper closer to God. We realize that this is a huge and lofty goal, but we believe that with your support and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can attain this goal.

If you would like to participate in this project, then we ask that you attend a brief meeting on Sunday, September 10th after worship to discuss the next steps of this project. If you have any questions about the project or would prefer not to get involved with it, please talk to Pastor Jeff or one of the members of the Worship Grant Team. We will be delighted to work together with you to reflect on, imagine, consider, envision, and develop a worship space that glorifies God and draws people to Him.

A few weeks ago, Wendy and I visited the BodyWorlds exhibit at the Science Museum in St. Paul. It was a fascinating display of the intricate workings of the human body. The exhibit demonstrated how each of the various systems of the body (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, etc.) functioned and what happens when injury or disease happens to those systems. The one thing I found most fascinating, though, was that as complex and detailed as each of these individual systems was, none of them could function completely on their own, separate from all the other systems. All the systems must work together to provide the necessary functions for the body to keep working correctly. For the body to function best, every part of each system must work together to do what it needs to do, and amazingly each system provides for all the other systems to do what they need to do.

In Romans 12, the Apostle Paul compares the Church to the human body by saying, “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others” (Rom. 12:4-5). Each one of us is a part of “the body,” and a part of a system of the body. We don’t all have the same function, but together we are all linked together and dependent on one another – making us all one body in Christ.

At Unity Church, we desire to function as “a body.” The first words of our Vision statement are: “To be a body…” In order for us to pursue this vision, we need to set up ways to function more like a body. This is the primary purpose of our Ministry Team Training Day. We want to enable and equip each Ministry Team to maximize its ministry effectiveness, which will in turn strengthen all the other parts of “the body.” To do this, we want to practically provide opportunities for you to use the gifts God has given to you. We want to maximize your passions, your giftedness, your experiences, and your visions for what this church can be. We want you to find purpose and fulfillment in contributing to the lives of others, making a difference in our community, and being formed into the person God created you to be.

To accomplish this goal, we intend to begin working on the following items at this meeting:

1. Connect each ministry with our overall Mission & Vision
2. Clarify the specific responsibilities of each Ministry Team
3. Collaborate on each of the various aspects of ministry
4. Confer ownership of decisions, resources, and authority to each Ministry Team
5. “Chunk” aspects of ministry so that no one is overwhelmed with unattainable tasks
6. Cultivate relationships among those who serve together on each Ministry Team
7. Create fresh ways of doing ministry that are multi-generational and relevant
8. Communicate effectively between Ministry Teams and the congregation

We look forward to what God has in store for us when we function together as Christ’s body. Please make every effort to participate in this essential piece of our ministry at Unity Church. We would like everyone to take part in this meeting. Thank you for your willingness to serve the Lord and his people.

In Christ,

Pastor Jeff

This morning we have the privilege of hearing from several of our youth who went on the Missions Trip to Chicago. May you join with them in sharing their joy of a wonderful time spent growing together, experiencing life in a different culture, and learning more of what God desires from each of us.

Next week as we conclude our series on Embracing Grace, we will also be celebrating the Lord’s Supper. Please come with the desire to be spiritually nourished by the Lord’s presence.
